'Grand Prize' at the 2023 National University Student K-Space Design Camp

- 41 participants from 9 universities in the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do region that carry out the LINC 3.0 project
- Daegu University students Kim Gyu-ri, Kim Min-seo, and Hong Ji-hyun won the grand prize with the design of "Yugokjeong."

Students majoring in service design at Daegu University's College of Arts and Design won the grand prize at the 2023 National University Student K-Space Design Camp held at Kensington Resort in Gyeongju from June 22 to 24, 2023.

Forty-one design-related-major students from nine universities in the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do region, which are carrying out the LINC 3.0 project, participated in this camp which was organized by Yeungnam University's LINC3.0 project group and participated in by the Korea Institute of Spatial Design as an industry-academic-research cooperation organization.

Participating students in this camp formed a team of five to discover realistic problems in the area through spatial analysis and conducted team-specific projects to present spatial design solutions while exploring the whole district of Gyeongju.

Students Kim Gyu-ri and Kim Min-seo, who are majoring in service design at Daegu University, teamed up with students from other departments (Hong Ji-hyun, student of interior architecture design) and Yeungnam University to carry out the project. This team decided to approach the problem of the "Museum," which displays various relics in Gyeongju.

Student Kim Gyu-ri said, "People often perceive museums as a formal educational space rather than a space they want to visit because they think museums are difficult and complex spaces.” She then added, “I wanted to improve museums so that people can get closer to history through changes in their perception of museums."

In response, the team members produced a design called "Yugokjeong" inspired by the winding water Yusanggoksu enjoyed by the Silla people in order to make the museum's rest area a flexible space where the sentiment of Silla people in the past and present coexists. Yusanggoksu means to let the drinking glass flow into the winding water.

This design was devised to give a natural sense of Silla’s history in space by making a way for capsules containing tea bags to roll on the railing outside the museum, and also designing the tea bags in the shape of Silla's historical value. The team also arranged benches in the form of Silla rooftiles.

Student Kim Min-seo said, "It was great to have a lot of fun and gain valuable experience while tackling a new area of spatial design and interacting with students from other universities through this camp." She then added, "It was even more valuable to receive the grand prize as a result of the project."

The Department of Service Design at Daegu University was newly established last year (2022). It develops a practical curriculum linked to various companies and industry, together with the Service Design Research Institute and the Graduate School of Service Design, and further operates a specialized design convergence and complex curriculum.
