University Introduce
About DUPrestigious university based on the spirit of Love, Light & Freedom
Reverend Rhee Young-shik devoted his life to lepers, the disabled, and the imprisoned. Throughout his life, he was immersed in the idea of educating and protecting the disabled and raising leaders to do so. Reverend Rhee Young-shik looks to have been greatly influenced by the Japanese pastor Toyohiko Kagawa.
Pastor Kagawa is considered a saint in Japan. He practiced the love of Christ himself. Therefore, Reverend Rhee Young-shik's family stayed at Light House Garden, where the disabled were housed, and shared their lives with them. In addition, the first president, Dr. Rhee Tae-Young, had a will to establish a school for the disabled ever since the Japanese colonial period. However, he could not fulfill that wish because Reverend Rhee Young-shik had been placed under Japanese surveillance. Dr. Rhee anecdotally expressed, "When establishing the Daegu Blind School, today's Daegu University, something akin to ideology, philosophy, faith, or aspiration sprung up. However, as you know, under Japanese colonial rule, severe surveillance prevented that goal from being achieved."
However, Reverend Rhee Young-shik kept his distance from politics, so much so that in his will he asked Dr. Rhee Tae-Young, the school’s first president, not to get involved in politics. Despite being an independence fighter, Reverend Rhee’s motivation was to overcome the pain and frustration of the people. He did not seek fame and prestige for himself. Thanks to his devotion to shedding light on society’s dark areas while himself living within them, he was able to establish today's Daegu University.
