Daegu University (the president Hong Duck-ryul) hosted the graduation ceremony for the second semester of 2009 at the Auditorium of Seongsan Hall, Gyeongsan Campus at 11:00 am Friday August 20.

At this ceremony, a total of 909 students received degrees including 688 bachelor degrees (including four students through credit bank programs), 186 master degrees, 34 doctoral degrees, and one honorary doctoral degree. The graduation ceremony was more meaningful because there were 86 international students and four handicapped students – two visually impaired and two physically impaired – who fought against the difficulty of their disabilities to graduate.

In particular, congressman Jeong Ha-gyun (Future Hope Solidarity Party, Member of Assembly’s Health Welfare Committee), who is Korea’s first quadriplegic handicapped member of congress and now actively serves to protect rights for social minorities including the disabled, was awarded an honorary doctoral degree, complete with graduation mortar board.

On August 18, Daegu University announced that it will grant an honorary doctoral degree of Law to congressman Jeong at the Auditorium of Seongsan Hall, Gyeongsan Campus, Daegu University at 11:00 am August 20 in recognition of his great accomplishments.

Congressman Jeong became severely-disabled by quadriplegia when he injured the number five and six cervical spine in a traffic accident on February 1, 1985 when he was 29 years old. However, he overcame the difficulties of his disability and began human rights campaigns for the disabled through vigorous NGO activities.

In addition, he contributed greatly to the enactment of ‘Disability Discrimination Act and Human Right Savory Act’ by serving as a legislative member of Disability Discrimination Act Promoting Solidarity on February 2003 and gave hope to other severely-handicapped people in Korea by working toward the development of physical training for the disabled and the improvement of human rights for people with spinal injuries.

Congressman Jeong, who joined the Assembly as the 18th congressman elected by Pro-Park Alliance Proportional Representation in 2008, submitted 15 motions for the disabled and social minorities including: ‘Resolution for the Formation of Special Committee for the Financial Measure of Social Welfare Project transferred to the Local Government’ and ‘Legislative Bill for the Management of Rare Disease and Support for the Rare Disease Patients’. He believes that politics is a process of balance and harmony.

In addition, he is recognized as a congressman who contributed greatly to the collection of public opinion and the reformation of systems by hosting 22 policy forums and discussions. He is also striving for Korea’s development in the field of bio-science by serving as a representative member of the ‘Assembly’s Bio-science Research Forum’ which is comprised of 22 current congresspersons.

Daegu University president Hong Duck-ryul said, “We have decided to grant a honorary doctoral degree of Law to congressman Jeong Ha-gyun after earnest screenings by the Graduate School Committee in the recognition of his contribution to political development and human rights protection for social minorities including the disabled as well as great accomplishment and actualization of Daegu University’s founding spirit.”
