Daegu University (president Hong Duck-ryul) soars.

Daegu University has recently been selected for the ACE+ project (Advancement in College Education +). Otherwise known as the 'well-taught university' project (approx. KRW 2 billion of funding this year), this selection comes on the heels of being selected for the LINC+ project (Society-customized Leaders in INdustry-university Cooperation +) (Approx. KRW 4.43 billion of funding this year). In addition, the University is still home to the IPP-type Work & Study Co-op Project (funding of KRW 1.1 billion this year); the University Creative Job Center Project (funding of KRW 500 million each year for five years) sponsored by the Ministry of Employment and Labor; and the Start-up Leading University Promotion Project (funding of KRW 2.6 billion this year) supported by the Small and Medium Business Administration. These honors follow last February's Korea Green Climate Award from the Korean National Assembly's National Climate Change Forum and selection by the Ministry of Employment and Labor as a leading university for employability. There's no end to Daegu University's good news. In fact, funding for national projects in excess of KRW 15 billion has been secured so far this year.

In particular, the ACE+ project is even more noteworthy since it was a team effort by everyone at the University, including President Hong himself. President Hong was in charge of giving presentations during the on-site inspection by the Ministry of Education. The ACE+ project will be implemented with the aim of fostering a 'well-taught university' and is an expansion and reorganization of the previous 'ACE project.' This project, which started in 2010, has selected universities with excellent capacity and plans for the development of undergraduate education; a total of 32 universities have received support in 2016. In addition to the existing 32 universities, the ACE+ project has selected 10 new universities this year. Newly selected universities will receive funding of approximately KRW 2 billion this year.

These government-sponsored projects are meaningful in terms of not only being beneficial to the finances of universities, but they also make it possible to innovate into a creative, convergent, and industry-academic cooperation friendly educational system that is suitable for the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Daegu University has transformed its approach into an industry-academic cooperation friendly one, through the promotion of the 'LINC' project, for which the University was selected in 2012 and has been executed for the past five years. In particular, the project attracted the attention of universities all around the country by breaking the framework of existing industry-academic cooperation that focuses on large corporations and science and engineering fields and expanding the scope of industry-academic cooperation to the field of small and medium-sized enterprises and humanities and social science fields.

The project group's vision is 'NEO', which stands for 'New Ecosystem for the Other 90%'. The other 90% refers to small and medium-sized businesses, social enterprises, female, and solo business founders who have been unrepresented in the current environment of industry-academic cooperation. Departments unrelated to science and engineering have also begun to participate in industry-academic cooperation, and now all 94 of Daegu University's departments are participating. The percentage of non-science and engineering students and faculty members participating in the industry-academic cooperative education programs such as capstone design and on-site field training is over 50%.

Daegu University plans to upgrade its attributes as an industry-academic cooperation-friendly university, which it has been developing over the past five years through the newly launched LINC+ project. In particular, a flexible semester system will be established to promote industry-academic cooperation and the 'NEO Intensive Semester System' will be introduced to activate technology and knowledge transfer. It will also establish the 'NEO education completion system' and the 'NEO technology and knowledge collaboration platform'.

The NEO Intensive Semester System is an innovative system that operates university lectures and industry-academic cooperation activities flexibly by applying 15-week general course and 5-week intensive course modules. The purpose of this system is to increase faculty members' support for the local community and local industry and to produce practical human resources by expanding students' participation in industry-academic cooperation programs. The university will establish the 'NEO education completion system' which will allow students to learn 'creative designing, design thinking, and capstone design' step by step. It also plans to establish a technology and knowledge cooperation platform by establishing an achievement assessment system and an invention compensation system that promote technology and knowledge transfer and technology and knowledge investment.

Daegu University plans to drastically innovate undergraduate education in terms of majors and liberal arts. As a result of being selected for the ACE+ project, it will introduce a 'convergence education platform centered on Education Cluster (EC)' for the first time within universities in Korea. EC refers to a bundle of 'curricula for creative convergence' centering on future values  beyond traditional academic structures such as colleges and departments. In other words, these flexible and open multidisciplinary majors allow any students to complete their courses by breaking away from the existing rigid college and department system that has been operated in a professor-oriented manner. It is especially attractive as a new measure to increase the university's competitiveness, while flexibly responding to the rapidly changing demands of students' needs and the society of tomorrow.

In addition, Daegu University has decided to start making full-fledged efforts to establish extracurricular programs to establish a Korea-specific Liberal Arts College (K-LAC) education system, to strengthen creative convergence major education, and to realize the University's founding spirit of Love, Light, and Freedom.

K-LAC is designed to enhance basic education and liberal arts education such as humanities and natural sciences. Daegu University named it 'Seongsan Liberal Arts College (S-LAC)' taking the University's founder, Reverend Rhee Young-shik's pen name, Seongsan. In S-LAC, liberal arts education is expanded to all years, which is currently centered only on the first year. In addition, the proportion of liberal arts education will be increased from the current 28 credits to 40 credits by the 2020 academic year.

As for major education, the University plans to develop and operate 70 convergence majors by the 2020 academic year starting with this year's 10 cluster-type convergence majors. In addition, a so-called 'Student-participation-based Challenging Semester', in which the students themselves conduct projects and set their own research topics, will be implemented. In addition, Daegu University plans to establish a '3L Extracurricular Program,' which is based on the English initials of the University's founding spirit: Love, Light, and Liberty. It will also strengthen field-based volunteer activities, career training, and student-led education programs.

Hong Duck-ryul, president of Daegu University, expressed his aspiration by saying, "Daegu University has decided to make a full-fledged educational innovation to actively respond to the demands of the future society such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution and changes in students' needs through the major national projects for which we have been selected. We are facing extraordinary challenges without precedent. I will ensure that we succeed in these projects, so that Daegu University can excel as an outstanding university that meets the demands of society and the times, and ultimately provides quality education to students."
